Rubin (Ruby) is a hybrid red wine grape variety selected at the end of the 1940s at the Institute of Vine-Growing and Wine Production in Pleven through the crossing of the Nebiolo and Syra varieties. Approved as a new variety from the State Variety Commission. Recommended for Southern and Eastern wine regions.
Average ripening variety – the first half of September. It develops well on hilly terrains with deep enough, medium-rich soils. It has strong growth, good fertility and average yield. The yield per hectare is 1000 – 1200 kg. The grapes are resistant to cracking and gray rot. After ripening it raises and increases its sugar content. It contains 23-25% of sugars, and in favorable years the sugar content can reach up to 30%.
The cluster is medium-sized (173 grams), conical, semi-compact to compact, with one or two wings. The grains are small, spherical, blue-red, with plenty of waxy varnish. The skin is thin, tough, strong, crack and decay resistant, rich in dyes and tannin. The meat is juicy and sweet, with a fresh and harmonious taste.
It is used to produce high-quality table, semi-sweet and sweet sorts. They are characterized by a deep dark red color, extraction and a good harmonious taste, with shades of blueberries, blackberries and violets. Wines have the potential for aging.
